Flyer vs Postcard vs Brochure: Which Format Actually Works for Your Business?

When it comes to printed marketing, one of the first questions Print Lord hears is: what should I actually be printing?

It is a fair question. Walk into any print conversation and you will be offered flyers, postcards, brochures, leaflets, folded sheets, rack cards, and half a dozen other formats, each with their own dimensions, finishes, and purposes.

But here is the truth: the format matters far less than the job it needs to do. Print Lord does not push formats. We ask what you are trying to achieve, who you are reaching, and where this piece of print will actually land. Only then can we recommend the format that works.

Today, we are breaking down three of the most common print formats, when each one works best, and how to choose the right one for your business without guessing or wasting money.

The Flyer: Fast, Flexible, and Built for Volume

A flyer is typically an A5 or A6 single sheet, printed on one or both sides. It is lightweight, cost-effective, and designed to be distributed in volume.

When a Flyer Works

Flyers excel when you need to reach a lot of people quickly with a single, focused message. Think event promotions, special offers, new product launches, or seasonal campaigns.

They work well for:
– Hand-to-hand distribution at events, markets, or busy locations
– Door-to-door drops in targeted areas
– Inclusion in orders, bags, or as counter takeaways
– Quick turnaround campaigns where speed and volume matter

When a Flyer Does Not Work

Flyers struggle when you are trying to convey complex information, multiple messages, or high-end brand positioning. They can feel disposable, which is fine if that matches your goal, but problematic if you need to build trust or credibility.

If your message needs space, structure, or longevity, a flyer is not the right choice.

Print Lord’s Flyer Advice

Keep your flyer message singular and bold. One headline, one offer, one call to action. Do not cram. If you cannot say it clearly in 50 words or fewer, you need a different format.

Stock matters too. A flimsy 130gsm flyer feels cheap. Move to 170gsm or 250gsm if you want it to feel substantial and worth keeping.

The Postcard: Targeted, Tactile, and Built for Direct Mail

A postcard is a sturdy, single-sided or double-sided card, typically A6 or DL size, printed on thicker stock (usually 300gsm or higher). It is designed to be mailed, handed out, or displayed.

When a Postcard Works

Postcards shine in direct mail campaigns, especially when paired with personalised messaging or variable data printing. They feel more personal than a flyer, more intentional, and they are harder to ignore.

They work well for:
– Targeted direct mail to existing or potential customers
– Event invitations or save-the-dates
– Thank you cards, loyalty offers, or reactivation campaigns
– High-impact, low-clutter messaging

When a Postcard Does Not Work

Postcards fail when you need to explain, educate, or present multiple options. They offer limited real estate, and anything beyond a single, clear message will feel cramped or confusing.

If your audience needs detail, context, or supporting information, a postcard will leave them wanting.

Print Lord’s Postcard Advice

Postcards demand clarity. One image, one message, one action. Use the back for your call to action, contact details, and a personalised touch if possible.

Choose premium stock and finishes. A postcard with a matte laminate or soft-touch finish feels considered and deliberate. Cheap postcards undermine your brand before the message is even read.

The Brochure: Structured, Substantial, and Built for Information

A brochure is a multi-page, folded, or saddle-stitched document, typically A4 or A5 in size. It is designed to educate, inform, and guide the reader through a structured narrative.

When a Brochure Works

Brochures excel when your business, service, or offering requires explanation. They give you space to lay out benefits, features, pricing, case studies, and calls to action in a logical, visual flow.

They work well for:
– Service-based businesses explaining what they do and how they help
– Product catalogues or menu-style offerings
– Welcome packs, onboarding materials, or information kits
– Trade shows, consultations, or high-consideration purchases

When a Brochure Does Not Work

Brochures fail when you are trying to grab attention quickly or distribute at scale. They are not designed for mass door drops or fast, impulse-driven actions. They require engagement, time, and interest from the reader.

If your audience will not sit down and read, a brochure is overkill.

Print Lord’s Brochure Advice

Structure is everything. A brochure should guide the reader step by step, not overwhelm them with walls of text or competing messages.

Use headings, subheadings, images, and white space to break up information. Every page should serve a purpose, and every fold should reveal something new.

Stock and finishing matter more in brochures than almost any other format. A poorly finished brochure with visible creases, misaligned folds, or cheap paper undermines every word inside it.

So, Which Format Should You Choose?

Here is the decision framework Print Lord uses with clients:

Choose a flyer if:
– Your message is simple and singular
– You need high volume and low cost
– Distribution is fast and wide (events, door drops, hand-to-hand)
– You are promoting something time-sensitive or impulse-driven

Choose a postcard if:
– You are targeting specific people with direct mail
– Your message is personal, focused, and intentional
– You want something tactile and harder to ignore
– You are building loyalty, reactivating customers, or inviting to events

Choose a brochure if:
– Your offering requires explanation and detail
– Your audience is already interested and considering their options
– You need to educate, guide, or present multiple services or products
– Credibility, professionalism, and structure matter

What About Mixing Formats?

Some campaigns work best with multiple formats. A flyer to grab attention, a postcard to follow up, and a brochure for those who want to know more.

Print Lord has guided clients through campaigns where a bold flyer drives traffic to an event, a postcard follows up with attendees, and a brochure is sent to serious enquiries. Each format does its job, and nothing is wasted.

The Real Question: What Are You Actually Trying to Achieve?

Format is not the starting point. Purpose is.

Before you order flyers, postcards, or brochures, ask yourself:
– What do I want the reader to do?
– Where will they encounter this piece of print?
– How much information do they need to take that action?
– What does this say about my brand?

Answer those questions honestly, and the format choice becomes obvious.

Print Lord Does Not Sell Formats, We Solve Problems

Print Lord exists to help businesses print smarter, not harder. That means recommending the format that works, not the one that makes the biggest order.

Sometimes that is a simple flyer. Sometimes it is a premium postcard. Sometimes it is a brochure that does the selling for you. And sometimes, it is none of the above.

If you are not sure what format you need, or you have been told one thing by a print portal and it does not feel right, talk to Print Lord. We will ask the right questions, give you honest answers, and make sure your print does the job it is meant to do.

On brand. On time. Every time.
