World Environment Day: The Truth About Print, Paper and Sustainability (No Greenwash Required)

Print Isn’t the Villain. It Never Was.

Every year on World Environment Day, the same tired narrative does the rounds. Go paperless. Print less. Save the planet. And every year, Print Lord is here to set the record straight, with evidence, not guilt trips.

Print has been cast as the environmental villain of the modern age. Meanwhile, the digital world quietly racks up a colossal carbon footprint behind a clean, glowing screen. The truth is a lot more complicated, and a lot more interesting, than the greenwash brigade would have you believe.

This is not a defence of wasteful, low-quality, throwaway print. This is a call for honest conversation. Because when print is done properly, sourced responsibly, and produced with care, it is one of the most sustainable communication tools available. Against the propaganda of the paperless lie.

The Paperless Myth: What the Data Actually Says

The clever people at Two Sides have spent years gathering independent research that challenges the ‘go paperless, save the world’ narrative. Their findings are eye-opening.

Managed forests in Europe, where the vast majority of paper for print is sourced, have actually grown by over 30% in the last two decades. Trees are a renewable resource. Paper is made from wood, and wood is grown, harvested, replanted, and grown again. That is not deforestation. That is responsible forestry.

Meanwhile, the global data centre industry consumes more electricity than entire countries. Every email you send, every document stored in the cloud, every scroll through a social feed, all of it burns energy, often powered by fossil fuels. The servers that power ‘paperless’ have a carbon footprint that dwarfs a well-managed print run.

None of this means digital is inherently bad. It means the conversation needs to be honest. And right now, it is not.

How to Choose Sustainable Print: A Practical Guide

Print Lord isn’t here to lecture. We’re here to help. If you want to make better choices when commissioning print this summer, here is exactly how to do it.

Look for FSC and PEFC Certification

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) are the two most recognised standards for responsibly sourced paper. When you see these logos on a print job, it means the paper has been traced back through the supply chain to a forest managed to strict environmental, social, and economic standards.

Always ask your printer whether their stocks carry FSC or PEFC certification. Print Lord uses certified stocks as standard, because it is the right thing to do.

Choose Recycled Stocks Where They Suit the Job

Recycled paper has come a long way. It no longer means flat, grey, and uninspiring. Print Lord offers recycled stocks across a range of weights and finishes, including a beautifully tactile 350gsm recycled uncoated option that works brilliantly for items like greeting cards and premium stationery.

Recycled stocks give the tactile warmth of natural paper without the need for new wood pulp. For the right job, they are an excellent choice, and Print Lord can advise on which products suit which stocks.

Specify Vegetable-Based Inks

Conventional inks have traditionally relied on petroleum-based oils as a carrier. Vegetable-based inks, made from soya, linseed, or other plant-derived oils, significantly reduce the use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and are more easily removed during paper recycling. Ask your printer whether vegetable-based inks are available for your job. For most standard litho print work, they are.

Go Local and Reduce Freight Miles

One of the simplest ways to reduce the environmental impact of any print job is to keep production close to home. Shipping print from the other side of the world, or even from the other side of Europe, generates unnecessary freight emissions. Print Lord is based in Brighton and produces work through trusted UK suppliers, keeping supply chains short and emissions low.

For local businesses across Sussex and Greater London, Print Lord can even arrange local collection or delivery, cutting out courier miles entirely.

Making Your Mark This Summer, Sustainably

Summer is the season of events, festivals, hospitality, and campaigns. It is also the season when print orders spike. Menus, signage, branded uniforms, exhibition graphics, and flyers all need to be briefed, produced, and delivered before the sun is properly out.

Here is how to make sure your summer print campaign is not only impactful but responsible.

First, plan ahead. Rush jobs mean less flexibility in stock choice and supplier selection. Give Print Lord enough lead time and the full range of sustainable options becomes available.

Second, think quantity carefully. Over-ordering to feel safe is one of the biggest sources of print waste. Print Lord will always advise on realistic quantities for your audience and venue, so nothing ends up in a recycling bin before it has done its job.

Third, choose quality over cheap. A well-made menu, a beautifully printed exhibition panel, or a premium branded leaflet lasts longer, performs better, and ends up as less waste than a low-cost alternative that warps, fades, or falls apart by August. Quality print is sustainable print.

Fourth, ask about paper origins. A good printer should be able to tell you where their stocks come from and whether they carry certification. If they cannot answer that question, that tells you something.

The Bottom Line

Print is not the enemy of the environment. Irresponsible print is. And the antidote to irresponsible print is not to stop printing. It is to print better, with a supplier who knows their stocks, cares about their supply chain, and will guide you towards choices that are good for your brand and good for the planet.

Print Lord exists to do exactly that. Every job, from a single run of greeting cards on 350gsm recycled uncoated to a full summer campaign across multiple formats, is handled with care, craft, and a commitment to getting it right.

This World Environment Day, make your mark. Make it well. Make it with print you can be proud of.
